President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

We have just experienced the summer solstice, a period considered favourable to the expansion, manifestation, and materialisation of projects. It also reminds us of the interconnectedness of all living beings and the intricate tapestry of life woven across our planet. In consonance, Toxicology recognizes that the well-being of humans, animals, and the environment is intertwined and that safeguarding one requires safeguarding all.

The expertise of toxicologists helps us understand the delicate interplay between chemicals, living organisms, and the environment and the pathways through which substances can affect our health. This allows us to assess risks, make informed decisions, develop safer alternatives, and ensure the preservation of life in all its forms.

May this solstice serve as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of Toxicology, as we are about to meet again, to celebrate the knowledge, dedication, and profound impact of those who tirelessly champion the cause of human and environmental health: the 57^th Congress of the European Toxicologists and European Societies of Toxicology that will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 10 to 13 September 2023, under the theme “Toxicology - multidisciplinary science leading to safer and sustainable life”. Thanks to the outstanding quality of the submissions for this congress and the hard work of our scientific programme committee, we have a vibrant programme, covering areas of current interest and relevance, such as the application of artificial intelligence in toxicology; the development, validation and application of new approach methodologies; quantitative adverse outcome pathway networks; risk perception, risk assessment, and risk communication; next-generation carcinogenicity assessments; drug abuse; human biomonitoring; developmental immunotoxicity; the toxicity of chemical mixtures and the exposome; and the hot topic of warfare agents, just to name a few.

The scientific programme and the networking with colleagues as well as a large number of exhibitors with links to the world of Toxicology are already more than attractive reasons for an expected high participation of delegates in the congress. On top of that, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a captivating city that deserves a visit. Its charming Old Town, with its picturesque streets and romantic bridges, creates a magical atmosphere. The city's commitment to sustainability, green spaces, and pedestrian-friendly streets adds to its appeal. Ljubljana's vibrant cultural scene, impressive museums, and delicious culinary offerings provide a well-rounded experience. Moreover, its proximity to stunning natural attractions like Lake Bled and the Julian Alps makes it an ideal base for exploring Slovenia's breathtaking landscapes.

Finally, since the Ljubljana congress marks the end of my term as President of EUROTOX, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation and admiration for all those who have tirelessly worked towards the success of this federation. The dedication, expertise, and passion demonstrated by each member of our committees (Executive, Nomination, Education, Communication, Registration, Corporate), our  Specialty Sections (Carcinogenesis, Immunotoxicology, ERASS, In2TOX, and Molecular Toxicology), our PCO – K.I.T. Group, our experienced, dedicated and efficient Secretariat office, and last but not least, our individual members and European Societies of Toxicology, have been instrumental in advancing the field of Toxicology and promoting the health and safety of individuals and the environment. Their hard work and commitment to excellence and innovation have not only elevated the profile of EUROTOX but have also positively impacted the scientific community and society as a whole.

As President, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such exceptional individuals, whose unwavering commitment and expertise continue to drive EUROTOX forward. I am confident that their continued efforts will pave the way for further advancements in Toxicology and lead to a safer and healthier future for all.
